A car battery has a relatively short lifespan for a major component. The short lifespan isn’t a fault, it’s caused by the breakdown of the chemicals inside the battery that enable it to store electricity. As your GMC dealer, we’d like you to know a few signs that you need to visit us for a new car battery.

YOUR BATTERY IS OLD
The average lifespan of a battery is from three to five years. The chemicals inside the battery slowly break down as they work to store electricity. The breakdown of the chemicals will cause the battery’s maximum charging level to slowly decrease and will make recharging more difficult. Eventually, the battery will run down completely and won’t be able to supply the electrical charge necessary to start the engine.
We can test your battery, and this will give you a heads-up on its health and potential remaining life. We test the battery by connecting it to our battery testing machine. This machine subjects the battery to a series of strength tests to determine its present health. If your battery is weak or failing, we can either repair the cause of the weakness or replace the battery, depending on the situation.
YOU HAVE TO JUMP-START
If you have to jump-start your car, this is a major sign that something is wrong. The problem could be that the battery is weak due to age, but there could be another problem with your engine. Our technicians will need to examine your car to identify the exact problem.
A failing alternator, for example, could weaken your battery enough that it doesn’t have the power to start your engine. One of the alternator’s functions is to recharge your battery, and a failing alternator will cause the battery to eventually fail. Damaged wiring or loose battery cables are other potential reasons for a very weak battery. We’ll identify the problem and fix it, and your car will be on the road again in no time.
CHECK BATTERY LIGHT
The warning lights on your dash identify a problem when it first appears. In the case of the battery light, it will illuminate in response to any problem that’s detected in the electrical system. The battery itself might not be the problem, but any problem in the electrical system will affect the battery.
Sensors attached to the various parts of the electrical system monitor it for signs of trouble. If one part of the system develops a problem, its connected sensor will alert your car’s computer. The computer will generate an error code and the battery light will light up. We’ll identify the problem from the error code and then repair it.
